Impact

Estonia is a great champion of freedom today, and we want it to remain so a century from now. We also hope that our well-educated, enterprising compatriots will keep making a positive impact on the world far into the future. Our non-profit platform, Skaala Impact, is meant to help this along. It unites all our social-impact investments, grants, and donations.

Our aim is to support Estonian society based on our values, helping the country become more resilient, competitive, and a better place to live.

❋ We’ve been actively investing in social initiatives since 2018. In the early days, we did this either as private individuals or used various vehicles. Since 2022, these efforts have continued under Skaala Impact.

Approach

We treat our impact initiatives as investments, not passive donations. The rigor and decision-making processes that guide our profit-oriented investments are also at work in our social ventures.

We don’t expect every initiative to turn a profit. But we do expect them to create a measurable impact, attract other partners, and have a strong team.

We think long-term, with a focus on creating positive change over a ten-year horizon. We typically make decisions 2-3 years in advance – longer partnerships lead to better outcomes.

Investments

In 2024, we made payouts totalling €5.3 million and entered into contracts worth €6.2 million. Most of the payouts, €3.5 million, were made to projects that promote education, which confirms that education remains a priority in our activities.

We allocated approximately a million in grants to new projects and used the remaining funds to provide follow-up support to existing portfolio projects. In total, we have more than 40 supported projects in our portfolio, and total payouts amount to €8 million.

Sectors

Education and youth mental health

We envision a modern, well-run education system in Estonia, one that supports every student and teacher. Our initiatives seek to make a difference across the entire system.

To identify the key issues where private capital can help, we worked with Praxis, a think tank. We realised that addressing youth mental health is just as crucial as educational improvements. Our focus areas include:

Challenges in Education:

  • Teacher shortages and inefficient time use
  • Improving the quality of school management
  • Linking subject-specific teaching with educational psychology

Challenges in Mental Health:

  • A need for better preventive measures
  • Improving self-help skills and mental health literacy
  • Ensuring equal access to support services

With these insights, we’re better equipped to find and support initiatives that address these needs.

In addition, we offered follow-on support to the following projects: KiVA, the Good Deed Foundation, Young Scholar’s Grant, and the Master of Digital Administration programme of the University of Tartu.

Encouraging entrepreneurship

Estonia is among the leaders in the creation of globally ambitious start-ups (Startup Estonia). We are known for the explosive growth of technology-based entrepreneurship and the creation of high-value jobs. We support programmes that enable the transfer of knowledge and practices acquired in the field of technology to other sectors of the economy, thereby increasing competitiveness.

Protection of freedoms

This is an area through which we want to promote European values, democracy and an open society. We believe that we can contribute through sharing Estonia’s digital success stories and international cooperation. A series of geopolitical events, which started with the military aggression against Ukraine and have now taken on a much broader dimension, have led us to the realisation that, in addition to telling stories, Estonia and Europe need a real, tangible defence capability. This is why we’ve become more active in supporting initiatives that strengthen Estonia’s national defence and our society’s preparedness for crises, thereby contributing to the preservation of European security and democratic values.

Social impact assessment criteria

Our belief in open societies extends to how we measure the impact of our work. We apply the following criteria to ensure each project aligns with our goals:
